Time to play a bit of catch up on my blog!
This little girl was the BEST sleeper so we got to play with a lot of setups!
I was super excited to try out my new fabric dream catcher I made only the week before.
This little cherub's great grandmother knitted her a gorgeous blanket which we added into a few shots!
What's your favourite image? I can't decide!!
Lauren Southwell | Mildura Newborn Photographer
Little Miss Ruby is actually my newest little niece. Ruby, her mum & sisters travelled to Mildura within her first 2 weeks of life so I was lucky enough to have a newborn session with her! She was a great little sleeper for us so we got through a few setups and got some gorgeous shots of Ruby with her two sisters!
Tully's mum contacted me a couple of weeks after his birth to book me in for a photo-shoot. She was hoping for some simple, natural images of Tully so when the day came, we opted for less props & used natural tones for the blankets. We popped in a bit of colour with wraps & hats & ended up with some gorgeous, natural images.
Tully was a very healthy 9lb 10 at birth & by the time I got to meet him, he was just so gorgeous & squishy!
As some of you may know already, I really love parents bringing along something personal to their shoot.
Tully's dad is a bit of a Cats fan, so we snapped a few simple shots of Tully with a itty bitty Geelong scarf.
Here's a few shots from our shoot. :)

I photographed Chantell & Daniel while they were visiting Mildura during the Xmas break.
We were blessed with a beautiful afternoon which gave us the opportunity to do some outdoor photos as well as indoor.
I just love a pregnant belly. It's very heart-warming to see so much love in a couples eyes
as they await the birth of their little one.
I love when my clients get right into a shoot. Chantell & Daniel were so happy to try anything I suggested and even shared their own ideas too! Baby must have been feeling the excitement of the shoot too, as halfway through the shoot I was fortunate enough to get the chance to feel bubba kicking.
.As I seem to be a tad behind on my blogging, I can report Chantell & Daniel have had a beautiful baby girl.
Thanks so much for a great photo-shoot guys, I cannot wait to meet your precious little girl!
Newborn photography shoots are best done when a baby is anywhere between 5 & 10 days old. At this age babies don’t have colic yet & usually haven’t started developing baby acne or cradle cap. They also feed a lot and consequently sleep a lot at this age. When a baby is very full, they get a little bit 'milk drunk'. This state is a photographers dream when it comes to photographing them. They are so sleepy and happily full that they can be posed into all sorts of gorgeous positions without disturbing them.
The best time to book a newborn photo-shoot is when you are past the 3 month mark in your pregnancy and you have been given a due date. This date is easily changed - (if bubs decides to stay a bit longer, or arrives early)
Once you have given me the due date, we will keep in touch, allowing you to let me know of any changes or to answer any questions you may have. When you have your precious bundle in your arms, you (or someone you delegate) can email, text or call me to let me know your exciting news & we can book in a time.
I like to start rather early so that I can work around your baby's routine. If you are coming to my home studio, I will get you to feed your baby (the bigger the better) as soon as you arrive - keeping her awake while she feeds so she gets a good amount.
If it is more convenient for you, I can come to your house. This helps mothers who may have needed to have a C- section. When I arrive, I will get you to start feeding your baby. It will take me a bit of time to organise my studio setup, so by the time bubs is finished feeding it will be action time.
I am often told by mums how nice it is for them to sit back and just watch their baby, while I am busy rocking, singing or hushing them to sleep. It's a nice time for mum to relax a little. I usually get dads to help me out if I need them. It could be to hold the baby while i set up the new scene, hold the baby's head to ensure her safety while doing a certain pose, or passing me more wipes when I need to clean up little accidents. (Not my own don't worry haha)
I love to include mum and dad, siblings and even any fur babies into the shoot to capture the relationships and bonds that have already formed in those first several days.
I also like to personalise each newborn photo-shoot & incorporate something from mum & dad's private life into the shoot. Perhaps dad plays basketball or is a builder, mum likes to knit or is a police officer, or maybe there is a special heirloom that has been handed down generation after generation. How special would it be to hang a photo on the wall of your baby in your grandmother's antique pram or gripping your grandfathers pocket watch?
Some mums don't feel too keen to model after giving birth, but you can get some special moments in those early days; Moments that you can look back on forever. I generally only take photos of mum & dad with bub from their hips upward (meaning you don't need to get out of those beloved PJ's if you don't want to :) but in the end it is completely up to you!
I would never force anyone to be in a photo if they weren't totally comfortable.
Expect the session to last 3-4 hours, so that we have plenty of time for baby to get relaxed and happy. This allows for plenty of time for cuddling, feeding and nappy changes.
For sessions in your home, I set up near a window or glass door with lots of indirect light. I may move some furniture around to make room. Since babies are usually photographed naked, we need the area WARM! Please have the room set to 27 for
my arrival, if we are not sweating, it is probably not warm enough. :)
Now as we all know babies don't stay babies for very long. That's why having a professional newborn photo-shoot can be so rewarding. You get to remember 'those lips' or how tiny their feet were for many years simply by looking at the wall, or photo album. Unfortunately these important (and oh so cute) little details often gets missed.
If you have missed the 5-10 day timeframe, don't stress. I am still able to capture this special time for you. The baby may not be a sleepy, but with a bit of gentle persuasion we can get a sleeping bub :)
This sweet little girl named Ella is just 3 months old, but already she has so much personality. I had so much fun photographing her. Although tired from travel, Ella was a perfect little model. We ended up with some beautiful pictures, here are some of my favourites. Doesn't she just melt your heart?
